How to resize images without stretching

Keep image proportions, calculate new dimensions and decide when cropping is better than resizing.

Resizing and cropping solve different problems

Resizing changes the number of pixels across the whole image. Cropping removes part of the image. If a shop asks for a square product photo but your original is a rectangle, preserving proportions while resizing will keep it rectangular. Crop to a square first if the composition allows it; forcing both dimensions into a square stretches the product.

Keep the original file so you can try a different crop or export later. Repeatedly saving a JPEG can introduce visible degradation. Make each new version from the original rather than from a previously compressed download.

Example: reduce a 2400 × 1600 photo

The aspect ratio is 2400 ÷ 1600 = 1.5. To make the width 1200 px while preserving the shape, the new height is 1200 ÷ 1.5 = 800 px. The same result comes from choosing a 50% resize. The output contains 960,000 pixels compared with 3,840,000 in the original; that does not guarantee a particular file size because format and quality also matter.

If you instead enter 1200 × 1200 without preserving proportions, circles become ovals and the product looks distorted. For a 1200 × 1200 listing, crop a square region and then resize that region.

Use Resize Images

  1. Choose a supported JPEG, PNG or WebP file. Check the original dimensions before choosing your target.
  2. Choose pixel dimensions or a percentage. Keep proportions enabled when changing width or height.
  3. Choose the output format. Use PNG or WebP if you need transparency; JPEG replaces transparent pixels with your chosen background.
  4. Select Process images, review the output dimensions and displayed file size, then download the result.
  5. Open the downloaded file and inspect text, faces and product edges at the size your audience will see.

Limits and troubleshooting

Increasing the dimensions cannot recover details missing from a small source photo. If the result is blurry, start with a larger original or reduce the requested size. If the file is still too large for an upload limit, reduce dimensions further or use JPEG/WebP compression and compare the result.

The tools process files on your device. Large batches can run out of browser memory even when the total file size is within the tool’s limit. Try one file at a time. Re-encoding removes most metadata, and animated WebP output retains only the first frame.

Questions and answers

Does resizing reduce file size?

Often, but not always. Pixel dimensions, format, compression settings and the original encoding all affect the result. Compare the displayed output size.

Why does my image still look rectangular?

Preserving proportions keeps the original aspect ratio. Use Crop Images when the destination requires a different shape.
