How to create a QR code for a business

Create a menu or business-card QR code, test the destination and avoid common printing and logo mistakes.

Start with a destination you control

For a café menu, use the full HTTPS address of a menu page on your own website. Open that address in a private browser window first: a customer should not need your account, a shared-drive permission or a staff login to see it. A short, stable address is easier to maintain than a temporary file-sharing link.

A website QR code stores the address in its pattern. If the address changes, the printed pattern does not change with it. Keep the original page available or redirect it to the new menu. BZ WorkOps does not provide editable destinations for ordinary website QR codes; saved app links are a separate account feature.

Create and check your code

  1. Open QR Code Generator and choose the website/link type. Paste the complete address, including https://.
  2. Use dark foreground modules on a light background. Keep an uninterrupted blank margin around the pattern; decorative backgrounds can interfere with scanning.
  3. If adding a logo, crop it in the logo controls and keep it small enough to leave the pattern readable. A logo is optional.
  4. Download PNG for a document or SVG for design work. Place it without stretching or cropping.
  5. Scan the downloaded file on another device, then print a sample at the intended size and scan it in the lighting where it will be used.

Example: a café menu card

Suppose your menu is at https://example.com/menu. Use that address as the QR content and print a visible label such as ‘Scan for our menu’, with example.com/menu beneath it. The text gives customers an alternative when their camera cannot scan, and lets them see where the code leads.

Test with at least two phones. Check that the menu opens on mobile data, that prices are readable without pinching to zoom, and that no sign-in screen appears. Recheck the printed code whenever you change the artwork or move the menu.

If the code will not scan

Try the original download before changing the content. If it scans on screen but not on paper, check print sharpness, glare, contrast, size and the blank margin. Remove the logo or choose a simpler style and compare. There is no single safe print size for every code: longer content can produce a denser pattern, and scanning distance matters.

Do not put passwords or confidential details in a public QR code. Anyone who scans it can read its embedded content. Wi-Fi codes can expose the network password, so use a guest network rather than an internal business network.

Questions and answers

Does a website QR code expire?

The embedded address has no built-in expiry, but the destination website, domain or file can stop working. Keep that destination maintained.

Can I change a printed code later?

You cannot change the address stored in a static code. You can change the page at that address or configure a redirect on a website you control.
